Top 3 Highest Rated Acne Treatments Updated March 2011
#1 – Exposed – Our most highly recommended Acne Product
Exposed acne treatment combines the two most popular scientific acne treatments (Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid) and keeps them both at levels that are friendly to the skin. This means that clearing your pores and preventing blackheads and whiteheads can be done whilst at the same time not being overly harsh. Such a powerful combination means that even people with very sensitive skin can have the most powerful treatment available. But Exposed doesn’t stop there. It also utilises many natural treatments for acne (Aloe Vera, Green Tea and Liquorice Root to name a few) which help clear the pores, aid healing which prevents future acne scars, removing dead skin cell and kill bacteria. Exposed has received the highest rating from our customers who also commended their excellent customer service. It uses FDA approved ingredients and has been proven to be Hypoallergenic. #2 – Acnezine – Highly Recommended
Acnezine is a two pronged attack on acne. Firstly it uses the ever popular scientific treatment, Benzoyl Peroxide. This clears the excess Sebum and kills the bacteria from deep within the pore. The second acne treating prong to the attack is to help the body fight acne from the inside. It uses supplements (like Vitamin E) that gives your natural immune system a boost that helps your skin to heal itself and become acne free. Again, this acne product uses the power of nature (with ingredients like Tea Tree Oil, Honey and Witch Hazel) to boost the effectiveness of this treatment for acne and make the effects longer lasting. Most products neglect the internal aspect of treating acne and therefore never quite reach their full potential, but Acnezine goes on a full attack. It can be a little harsher than Exposed and doesn’t contain Salicylic Acid which is why it just misses out on the top spot. That said, Acnezine is one of the most effective acne treatments on the market today and gets great results. READ ON FOR FULL ACNEZINE REVIEW
#3 – Zenmed – Also Recommended
Zenmed acne treatment really puts the focus on natural acne remedies with oral cleanse capsules that contain some great natural ingredients (such as Milk Thistle, Burdock root and red peony root). This is because the people at Zenmed are strong believers that acne is an internal problem and by addressing this you can get the best treatment for acne. It even goes so far as to naturally regulate hormone changes, which is the core cause of acne. However, this does not mean that they have neglected the external fight against acne as they have included the great scientific acne treatment that is Salicylic Acid which works to unblock pore and promote an accelerated renewal of skin (also used in the anti-ageing industry). It misses out on our Top 2 spots because it isn’t quite as effective Exposed and Acnezine but is still a great product and and with a score of 8.9/10 we definately thought that it was worth a mention. Zenmed has long lasting effects and fantastic health benefits that go beyond treating acne. READ ON FOR FULL ZENMED REVIEW
Types of Acne Treatment

These are the lowest risk and often most effective treatment for acne and should always be tried first before resorting to such treatments as an acne laser treatment and acne antibiotics.
Most treatments for acne will contain scientific ingredients (such as Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid) but the best acne treatments will also contain Natural acne treatments (such as Tea Tree oil, Burdock Root and Witch Hazel) which are kinder to the skin and really boost the power.
Alternative treatments for acne focus on improvements that you can make to your daily routine such as cleansing deep into the skin to keep it oil-free and changes to your diet (including supplements that include zinc) which will help your skin to become acne free. Key functions for Treating Acne
Acne is caused by hormonal change that effects the Sebaceous Gland in the hair follicle. The changes in hormones cause this gland to over produce a substance called Sebum which is the natural skin oil. When too much of this skin oil is produced it gets clogged under the pore and that is when blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, zits and acne cysts all start to appear. These symptoms of acne can be made worse by bacteria levels in the skin, as these causes the immune system to start to fight it by releasing white blood cells (or pus) into the follicle lining and increasing the blood flow. Because acne vulgaris is caused by hormone change it makes it difficult to find an acne cure. But with the best acne treatment you can live a life without these symptoms. When reading treatment for acne reviews you should make sure that the ingredients used can do the following tasks:
- Remove and reduce Sebum
- Kills bacteria
- Unblock pores
- Reduce Inflammation
Stop Future Acne Scars
By getting the best treatment now (and especially one with anti-inflammatory properties) you can reduce future scarring after acne. Acne scar treatment can be expensive and in extreme cases it has to be done with laser treatment which can have varying effects.
Acne Treatment Questions
If you are struggling to find answers to your questions about treating acne please feel free to contact us via our contact page and we will endeavour to answer them. Also if you have tried any acne treatments that we have reviewed or treatments for acne that we have not mentioned, we would love to hear your feedback as this will help others in the future to get the best acne treatment.
What is the Best Acne Treatment?
When I had acne there was only one question on my mind. What is the best acne treatment? I had to find out. Unfortunately, when I looked on the internet for the answer I was disappointed to find that no-one could answer this question. I found that before they even attempted to give the information that I was looking for they were already shoving an acne product down my throat and saying that it was the best because it cured acne. How did it help acne?
Now I am not someone who will take marketing hype as a given and I hope that you aren’t too. I need facts. I need something to back up their claims that this product works and not just some celebrity, who probably has the clearest skin anyway, telling me that this product will make my skin the same as theirs. I don’t know about you but I am not going to believe that.
This is why we decided to make this site. After a massive research mission to clear our acne we know what makes an acne product work. And so you know now, it isn’t television advertising. The thing that makes an acne product work is what is inside the acne treatment. Obvious, right? Well you know to know what each ingredient does and how it helps acne which makes things slightly more complicated.
So when we review an acne treatment we look at all the ingredients included and look at the system of applying the treatment and ask if it is going to perform the 4 essential functions needed to treat acne. These 4 functions are:
1) Kill Bacteria
2) Remove Sebum
3) Unclog Pores
4) Reduce Inflammation and redness
And not only does it have to do these things but an acne treatment also has to be kind to the skin and most importantly – kind to the pocket. If a treatment doesn’t get the results that the price suggests we chuck it out. We are not going to pay for marketing hype and we don’t want you to either.
So once everything is boiled down we are left with the best acne treatments available and the price they should be sold at. Find out which acne treatment came top of the polls by visiting our acne treatment reviews page to you can go strait to our best acne treatment
Best acne treatment for oily skin
When looking for an acne treatment that best suits you there are some things that you should consider. We often get asked what is the best acne treatment for oily skin. Firstly, before we get to the finding you the best acne treatment we have to address the cause of oily skin so that we can treat it properly.
If you have read our causes of acne post then you will know that acne usually occurs during times of rapid hormone change. It is this hormone change that causes the sebaceous gland in the hair follicle to start to over produce an oily substance called Sebum. This sebum is essential for maintaining the health of the skin but when too much of it is produced it can get trapped beneath the surface causing acne symptoms or it makes its way to the surface of the skin which gives it an oily complexion. It is not the only cause of acne but if you have oily skin then it is the most probably cause of acne.
Therefore, for an acne treatment to be the best acne treatment for oily skin it needs to be good at removing this oil. There are some ingredients that can be used in acne treatments that are included for the very purpose of removing excess oil from deep within the skin. One such treatment is Benzoyl Peroxide. This is a powerful ingredient that breaks down and removes the oil.
Having said this, the best acne treatment for oily skin does not mean that you should just use a treatment that has the highest concentration of benzoyl peroxide because your skin needs time to adjust and if you have sensitive skin then using too high a concentration could actually make your acne worse. Benzoyl Peroxide can come in a concentration of 2.5%, 5% or 10%. Some acne product companies will market theirs as the best acne treatment for oily skin because it has the highest percentage but if you have not used Benzoyl Peroxide before then you should use a treatment that has 2.5% concentration.
If after a while you find that your skin starts to get very oily again then it might be time to up the concentration or use other complimenting ingredients like Tea Tree Oil that does the same thing as Benzoyl peroxide but is a natural acne treatment.
I hope this has helped and if you are still having trouble with your acne treatment plan please stay tuned for our “acne treatment trouble shooting” post that we are currently working on. Feel free to subscribe to our RSS feed at the top so that you are notified of any new information.
Acne Treatment Trouble Shooting
Sometimes people can buy a great acne treatment and their acne can get worse. When this happens, 9 times out of 10, it can be because you are using the wrong acne treatment or doing something to aggravate your acne. So we have come up with the most common reasons why an acne treatment might not be working in this acne treatment trouble shooting post. If you read through this and you haven’t found something that explains your situation, please feel free to drop a comment in the box below and we would be happy to work it out.
I am using an acne treatment but my skin is still greasy and I get blackheads
If you have been using an acne treatment and it stopped you getting pimples but you are still left with greasy skin blackheads then there is a good chance that your acne treatment is Salicylic Acid based. Salicylic Acid is great at unblocking skin pores but it is not designed to remove the oil and grease that accompany acne. Solution: Try to incorporate Benzoyl Peroxide into your acne treatment routine.
My skin is dry and not greasy but I am still getting pimples and whiteheads.
Acne is often caused by the pores of your skin getting blocked. If you used to have greasy skin but that cleared up with you acne treatment then the chances are that you acne treatment is Benzoyl Peroxide based. Benzoyl Peroxide is good at getting rid of grease but if the pores of the skin are blocked then the Benzoyl Peroxide can not do its job. Solution: Incorporate an exfoliate like salicylic acid into your acne treatment routine
I am still getting acne cysts even after using one of the top acne products
The best acne treatments can penetrate deep into the skin but for some this just is not deep enough. Acne cysts can start very deep in the skin and when the bacteria really starts to build up these cysts can become very painful. Solution: You should see a doctor about prescription acne medication, like antibiotics, as these will help.
My acne treatment has made my acne worse
The first question we have to ask is how long have you been using this acne treatment. If it is less then 2 weeks the first thing to check is whether your acne treatment contains salicylic acid. In some rare cases, people with very sensitive skin can find that their acne gets worse the first time they start using salicylic acid. This is because the ingredient has irritated the skin which has inflamed the acne symptoms that are already there giving the appearance of acne getting worse. However, the skin usually builds up a tolerance to Salicylic Acid and once this initial irritation has subsided their acne improves. Solution: Continue to use the treatment but lessen the amount or frequency of application. You want your skin to build up a tolerance so by using smaller amounts you can do this without causing too much irritation.
I am using your most recommended acne treatment but still I have acne
If this is the case, we would really like to hear from you. You can drop a comment in the box below (don’t have to use your real name) and we can try and solve this. Our top treatment has covered all the bases when it comes to acne treatment so we would not expect to see many people with this problem. However, it can happen. Solution: There are two main things that you can check if this is the case. The first is to ask yourself if you are touching or squeezing your acne. If you are then your acne will never go away. Leave it alone. The next thing to ask yourself is if you are drinking enough water every day. You should be drinking at least 8 glasses a day. If you are using our top acne treatment and doing these two things and still your acne is getting worse (or not improving considerably) then please drop us a line in the bottom. Thanks.
Acne Products – We Recommend the Best
There are a huge amount of acne products our there that all promise to be the best for acne sufferers but how do you know which will help you become acne free. Here at AcneTreatmentAdvice we have searched for and researched hundreds of acne products to find you the best acne treatment available. But why should you trust us?
Every website you across in your search for an acne treatment will say that they are giving you the best advice and that you should buy their top acne product so what makes us any different. Well, for starters, we are an independent website that is not affiliated to one particular product. Several of the sites that you come across will be the website of a company that has their own acne product. This means that they will, obviously and understandably, be bias. It is only when you have the freedom to look at all the products on the market as equals until proven otherwise that you can confidently say that you are giving the best advice.
So what do we take into consideration when we are reviewing acne products? We spend a lot of time on each product that we consider for our top 20 acne products. So to show our working, here is the criteria that must be met.
The results of the acne products. This is probably the most important part of any review and the one that we give the most weight to. We search heaps of independent forums and reviews and see which are getting the best feedback. We have learnt to separate reviews that are bias and spend most of our time analyzing the worst reviews to see if there was something that user did wrong. Where possible we will even speak to the reviewers so that we can make sure they are genuine. This gives us the absolute best idea of which acne products work and which don’t.
The ingredients involved. As we have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours educating ourselves about acne and what causes it we can take a view on all the ingredients. By understanding what the ingredients in acne products do you can work out if the combination that they are using is going to work best or have they cut corners and spent the money they saved on marketing (there are a few culprits there). Analyzing the ingredients and the way these ingredients are used is key understanding an acne treatment and if it is going to work (and this helps when making the 4 points in our review about “removing sebum”, “Kills bacteria”, “Unclogs Pores” and “Reduces Inflammation”). When you combine this with research that you have done on the results of acne products you can start to get a real understanding about which is best.
Value for money. There are a lot of criteria that make up what makes good value for money. The single most important point that we have taken into account is obviously the price versus the results. We believe this to be what most acne sufferers are interested in so we give this the most “weight” in our reviews. However, the top acne products come with ingredients that are more focused on long term skin care as they like top be a complete acne skin care package rather than just an acne treatment so we have taken this into consideration too.
So, when you choose one of our top acne treatment products you can be confident that you are getting the best product on the market. You can also be confident that you are not paying for Hype and Marketing, that are reviews are unbiased and that you will achieve the best results for every dollar you spend.

Acne Treatment Reviews – Our Rating system
Today we are discussing our acne treatment reviews and how they work. We have developed an acne treatment scoring system that rates acne treatments on the 6 things that you should look for to get the best acne treatment.
These six criteria that are important when reviewing acne treatment are:
1) Removing Sebum. The main cause of acne is removing the sebum in the skin. It is this sebum that get trapped in the skin and becomes a breeding ground for acne. Acne treatments should be able to remove this sebum if they are going to stop pimples so a high score on this will get you one step closer to getting the best acne treatment.
2) Kills Bacteria. It is the bacteria in the skin that turns acne into inflammatory acne. By killing this bacteria you reduce the size and severity of acne. Our top scoring acne treatment reviews will contain ingredients that remove bacteria and therefore help reduce the appearance and severity of acne.
3) Unclogs Pores. Clogged pores is the second most common cause of acne and by unclogging these pores you will stop the sebum from getting trapped below the skin and also allow the acne treatment to get deeper in the skin thus being able to remove more sebum.
4) Reduce redness and inflammation. When you reduce the redness and inflammation of the skin you lessen the appearance of acne. Reducing inflammation also lessens the impact that acne has on the skin and therefore the likelihood of acne scars. This is an important factor to be taken into consideration when writing acne treatment reviews
5) Kindness to skin. Many acne treatments can do the first 4 stages quite successfully but if they are not kind to the skin when they are applied then they can irritate the skin and even make acne worse. When a natural acne treatment is included it can help sooth the skin and make the treatment more effective.
6) Value for money. Obviously when purchasing a product you want to know that you are getting value for money. Therefore we have taken actual results achieved into account on our acne treatment reviews and put this against price. An acne treatment could look good in the previous scoring but lack in one factor (like kindness to skin) which means that it will not work that well. This is why it is important to take the results achieved into account.
We have been through heaps of acne products trying to find the best to review. If you would like to see our best acne treatment you can go to Exposed acne treatment reviews or for our second best go to Acnezine Reviews.
